Every operator who eventually earns the Navy SEAL Trident begins with exactly the same question.

Not whether he is brave enough. Not whether he is strong enough. But whether he can continue functioning after comfort, certainty, and even clear thinking begin slipping away.

The journey toward becoming a United States Navy SEAL is often described as one of the hardest military training pipelines in the world, but the famous images of candidates carrying boats or standing waist-deep in the Pacific tell only part of the story.

Historically, this period has produced one of the highest rates of voluntary withdrawals. Instructors understand the timing.

Rather than easing pressure, they often increase complexity. Tasks demand greater coordination. Orders arrive faster.

Environmental stress continues without interruption. The objective remains unchanged. Can candidates continue making sound decisions when nearly every physical and psychological system argues for stopping?

Those who move beyond this stage often discover something unexpected. The finish line, while still distant, begins to feel imaginable for the first time.

Those who remain after Wednesday night often describe an unexpected shift. The pain has not disappeared.

The cold has not become any less biting, and exhaustion still hangs over every movement like an invisible weight.

Yet something changes inside the class. The finish line, once impossible to imagine, slowly begins to feel real.

Every completed evolution removes another obstacle standing between the candidates and the end of the week.

By Thursday morning, the training compound looks noticeably different than it did only a few days earlier.

The neat rows of candidates who began First Phase together have become much smaller. Empty spaces appear where classmates once stood.

Some left because of injuries that required medical attention. Others made the personal decision to end their attempt by ringing the brass bell.

Some who complete Hell Week successfully are later removed from training because injuries prevent further participation or because required standards are not maintained.

Those who complete First Phase move into an entirely different environment. Second Phase. If the opening weeks emphasize physical endurance, Combat Diving emphasizes technical precision under pressure.

Candidates learn both open-circuit scuba and closed-circuit diving systems, mastering underwater navigation in conditions where visibility can disappear completely.

Candidates begin integrating the endurance developed during earlier phases with the technical and tactical skills required during operational missions.

Completing BUD/S marks an extraordinary achievement, yet another common misconception appears here. Graduation from BUD/S does not make someone a Navy SEAL.

Instead, graduates continue into SEAL Qualification Training, widely known as SQT. Over approximately twenty-six additional weeks, they receive advanced instruction in combat medicine, close-quarters battle, maritime operations, advanced weapons systems, communications, cold-weather survival, demolitions, and numerous specialized disciplines.

They also complete Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape training, commonly abbreviated as SERE, preparing personnel for situations involving isolation or capture.

Parachute qualification follows as another important milestone, introducing both static-line and military free-fall techniques before new operators eventually receive the coveted SEAL Trident.

Even then, the journey remains unfinished. Assignment to an operational SEAL Team begins another extended period of unit integration and mission-specific workups that frequently lasts between twelve and eighteen months before deployment.

From the moment a candidate earns an SO contract until reaching an operational platoon, the entire pipeline commonly approaches two and a half years.

The pipeline has also continued evolving. In February 2022, SEAL candidate Kyle Mullen became the focus of intense public attention after collapsing following the completion of Hell Week and later passing away.

A second candidate required hospitalization the same day. The subsequent investigation by the U.S. Navy and the Department of Defense Inspector General examined multiple contributing factors, including performance-enhancing drug use by some candidates, aspects of medical oversight, and policies surrounding monitoring during extreme training.
