They were completely helpless and isolated from all familiar life. Why did God leave them in such extreme confinement for 40 days?
Because that was the exact amount of time needed for a supreme purification. The waters of judgment drowned the seeds of corruption.
But those very same violent waters lifted the ark of grace high above. Are you feeling like your life is trapped in a tight god’s suffocating space goddess, debt, gore, brokenness?
Do not despair gods. The storm you are bracing against today is exactly how God is washing away the toxic things from your life.

They are the sights of life or death. Spiritual warfare. Follow me up the cold fogcoed peak of Mount Si.
The book of Exodus reveals a picture of Moses that makes me shudder in awe.
Twice he was immersed in the presence of God for a full 40 days and 40 nights.
He had not a single crumb of bread. He had not a single drop of cool water.
Please do not be mistaken. This was not some fanatical self-punishment to prove himself. The second time he climbed that mountain, millions of people were frantically dancing around a golden calf right at the bottom.
Moses fell face down to the ground. He used his own wasting life as a shield to beg for grace for a rebellious nation.
Gods. Those 40 days brought physical exhaustion, but they were the shining pinnacle of of intercession.
He bravely stood in the gap. He carried the sins of the flock. And then he brought back the ten commandments containing the law of life.
But my friends, the greatest loosest atmost earth shaking 40-day experience in the history of the universe belongs to Jesus Christ.
It was his lonely footsteps through the desert of death. Right after his baptism, the Holy Spirit led him into the wilderness.
He was not there to hide. He went there to confront the most cunning enemy face to face.
40 straight days of fasting. Please close your eyes and feel the extreme toll on his physical body.
A gnoring hunger tore at every cell. A suffocating loneliness surrounded him. And at the exact moment when Jesus Christ was physically weakest, Satan appeared.
He thrust venomous daggers at the most basic survival needs. He attacked with worldly pride and power.
He challenged him to turn stones into bread. But the response of Jesus Christ always gives me goosebumps when I think about it.
He is the incarnate word. He had more than enough power to blow Satan away with a single breath in but he chose to draw the sword of scripture to fight.
He declared that man shall not live by bread alone. Man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
He was setting an example through blood and tears for all of us. M friends, Satan never attacks when you are at the peak of success.
He does not attack when your finances are abundant or your family is at peace.
He lurks in the shadows. He will pounce when you are devastated by a terminal medical report.
This he will strike when your business goes bankrupt. He will hit you when you are abandoned and desperately craving love.
That is your most brutal 40-day period. That is when the devil brings the stones of compromise.
He whispers in your ear to take a shortcut. He tells you that God has abandoned you in your own personal desert.
What weapon will you use to survive? The response of Jesus Christ is a sharp awakening.
Material solutions or cheap worldly schemes will never save a starving soul. Only by clinging tightly to the word of God can we shatter all the flaming arrows of the enemy.
If the word of God is our ultimate weapon in the wasteland gods, what happens when the warrior’s hand drops the sword the goods?
What happens when they are exhausted from the very depths of their soul? Three. Dear friends, have you ever fought with 40 in in the kingdom of God?

Take my life. This psychological breakdown is so real and heartbreaking. But church, look at how the Almighty treats an exhausted servant.
He did not send lightning. He did not yell or scold his cowardice. He sent an angel with a freshly baked loaf of bread and a jar of cool water tombing it.
He let him eat and then gently let him sleep. After that journey, God took Elijah on a long journey of exactly 40 days and 40 nights to Mount Horeb.

No person and no past is ever too terrible for God to turn his back and abandon.

The 40 days after Jesus Christ rose from the dead, he had crushed the power of the grave.
